Flat-Pack Assembly

Flat-pack furniture saves money and is easy to get home, but building it can take a whole weekend, a lot of patience and occasionally a spare part that doesn’t seem to exist. Large wardrobes and tall bookcases also need two people and should be fixed to the wall once they’re up. We assemble flat-pack furniture across Pakenham, Officer, Beaconsfield and surrounding towns, so you can skip the frustration and have it built properly the first time.

What we assemble

  • Wardrobes, including large sliding and hinged-door systems
  • Bed frames, bunk beds, trundles and storage beds
  • Chests of drawers, tallboys and bedside tables
  • Desks, office chairs and filing cabinets
  • Bookcases, shelving units and cube storage
  • TV units and entertainment cabinets
  • Dining tables and chairs
  • Cots, change tables and nursery furniture
  • Outdoor furniture, storage boxes and small garden structures
  • Kitchen trolleys, pantry units and laundry cabinets
  • Shoe racks, hall stands and entry storage

We assemble pieces from the major retailers and smaller brands, and can also re-assemble furniture after a move.

Why it pays to have it done properly

Built square and stable

Flat-pack furniture depends on being built square. If a carcass is slightly twisted, doors won’t line up, drawers will stick and the unit will rack over time. We check for square, use the right cam and dowel sequence and tighten everything correctly.

Doors and drawers adjusted

Most cabinets have adjustable hinges and drawer runners. Taking the time to set them up properly is what makes a wardrobe look good and work smoothly for years. We adjust every door and drawer so gaps are even and everything closes softly.

Anchored to the wall

Tall furniture can tip, especially if a child climbs it or drawers are all pulled out at once. Most tall pieces include an anti-tip kit, but the fixings supplied are often not suitable for every wall. We fix tall units to studs or masonry with appropriate fixings, which is especially important in homes with young children. Product safety regulators recommend anchoring all tall furniture.

Less waste and mess

We break down cartons, gather packaging and leave the room tidy. Ask us if you’d like the cardboard taken away.

Fitting it into your space

Many homes in the new estates of Officer and Pakenham have built-in robes, but people often add drawer systems, shoe storage and shelving inside. In older homes, freestanding wardrobes fill the gap. We can:

  • Check measurements before you buy, including skirting and ceiling heights
  • Assemble units in the room where they’ll stand, so they don’t need to be carried through doorways
  • Trim or scribe filler panels where a unit meets an uneven wall
  • Fit wardrobe internals such as drawers, rails and shoe racks

Office and commercial furniture

We assemble desks, chairs, storage and meeting tables for home offices and small businesses across Pakenham and surrounds. For new offices or refits, we can build multiple pieces in one visit, and work outside business hours if needed.

Nursery furniture

Cots, change tables and nursery storage must be assembled correctly for safety. We follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, check all fixings and anchor tall units. We don’t modify cots or use non-original parts.

Missing or damaged parts

It happens. If a part is missing or damaged, we’ll identify it, tell you exactly what’s needed and, where possible, finish the rest so only one small step remains once the part arrives. Retailers generally send replacement parts quickly.

Moving and re-assembly

Flat-pack furniture can often be disassembled and rebuilt when you move, though cheaper pieces may not survive multiple builds. We can take apart furniture before a move and rebuild it in your new home, tightening and reinforcing where needed.

Why flat-pack goes wrong

Flat-pack furniture is designed to be built at home, but there are plenty of ways it can go wrong:

  • Missing or wrong parts. Checking the parts list first avoids discovering a missing piece halfway through.
  • Over-tightened screws. Particleboard strips easily. Hand-tightening the final turns protects the threads.
  • Cam locks not engaged. If cam locks aren’t turned fully, joints can loosen and the item wobbles.
  • Backs not squared. The back panel keeps a cabinet square. If it’s nailed while the cabinet is out of square, doors and drawers won’t line up.
  • Doors and drawers not adjusted. Hinges and runners almost always need fine-tuning once the item is in its final position.
  • Building in the wrong room. Large wardrobes built flat on the floor may not stand up under a low ceiling, or fit through doorways once assembled.

We avoid these problems through experience and by building in the right place.

Large and complex items

Some flat-pack items are big projects:

  • Wardrobe systems with multiple modules, sliding or hinged doors, internal drawers and accessories
  • Bunk beds and loft beds that need precise assembly for safety
  • Office desks with cable management, drawers and hutches
  • Kitchen and laundry cabinets from flat-pack ranges
  • Outdoor furniture and play equipment including cubby houses, swing sets and gazebos
  • Garden sheds in kit form (see note below)
  • Exercise equipment such as home gyms and treadmills, where the manufacturer allows non-technician assembly

For these, we allow enough time to do the job properly and check every fixing.

Anchoring furniture

Furniture tip-overs injure children every year. Tall and heavy items like bookcases, chests of drawers, wardrobes and TV units should be anchored to the wall. Most flat-pack furniture comes with an anti-tip kit, but the supplied wall plug often isn’t suitable for plasterboard. We fix anchors into studs or use suitable hollow-wall anchors, and we do this as standard for tall items unless you ask us not to.

Kit sheds

Steel garden sheds in kit form need a level, solid base, usually a concrete slab or a timber or steel base frame, and must be anchored against wind. On exposed sites in Pakenham South, Officer South and across the open country to Bunyip, wind anchoring is especially important. Larger sheds may need a building permit. Check with Cardinia Shire Council before buying. We assemble smaller kit sheds on an existing suitable base.

Outdoor furniture

Outdoor settings, sun loungers, benches and planters come flat-packed too. We assemble them using the supplied hardware or upgraded stainless fixings where the supplied ones are likely to rust. Treating timber outdoor furniture with oil after assembly helps it last.

Moving and positioning

After assembly, we position items where you want them, level them on uneven floors, and adjust doors and drawers. If an item needs to go upstairs, we’ll usually assemble it in the room where it’ll stay.

Disassembly and reassembly

Moving house? Flat-pack furniture often doesn’t survive being moved fully assembled. We dismantle items before the move, bag and label hardware, and reassemble at the new home. Particleboard can lose strength with each reassembly, so we use new fixings or reinforce joints where needed.

Packaging and rubbish

Flat-pack generates a lot of cardboard and plastic. We flatten and stack cardboard for your recycling bin, or take it away on request. See odd jobs and rubbish removal.

Common brands and systems

We assemble furniture from the big homewares and furniture retailers as well as online-only brands. Each has its own fixings and quirks: cam-and-dowel systems, wooden dowels with glue, confirmat screws, click-together connectors and metal frame bolts. Familiarity with these systems means faster, more accurate assembly and fewer surprises.

Damaged or faulty parts

Sometimes a panel arrives chipped or a hole is drilled in the wrong place. We’ll stop and show you before going further. Most retailers will replace damaged parts if you contact them with the item number and part number from the instructions. We can often work around minor issues so the rest of the item gets built while you wait for a replacement part.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have the boxes in or near the room where the item will go.
  • Clear floor space for laying out parts.
  • Keep the instructions and hardware bags together.
  • Let us know if items need to go upstairs or through narrow doors.
  • Tell us whether you’d like tall items anchored to the wall.

Furniture for rentals and new builds

Many people moving into new homes in Officer, Pakenham East and Officer South, or into rentals across Pakenham, need a lot of furniture assembled at once. We can work through a whole house’s worth of items in one booking, anchoring tall pieces and hanging mirrors and shelves as we go.

Timing

Small items such as bedside tables take well under an hour. Large wardrobe systems, bunk beds and play equipment can take several hours. Send us the product names or links and we’ll estimate the time before the visit.

Larger orders can be split over two visits if needed.

We’ll confirm timing and anything you need to prepare before we arrive.
