Bathroom Fixtures & Accessories

Bathrooms get used every day by everyone in the house, and the small fittings take a lot of wear. Towel rails work loose, toilet roll holders snap off, shower caddies rust and mirrors are left hanging on one screw. Fitting or replacing these accessories means drilling through tiles without cracking them and fixing into a wet area without letting water in. We install and repair bathroom accessories across Pakenham, Officer, Beaconsfield and surrounding suburbs, and we do it neatly and carefully.

What we install and repair

  • Towel rails, towel rings and towel ladders (non-heated)
  • Toilet roll holders
  • Robe hooks and towel hooks
  • Shower shelves, caddies and niches accessories
  • Soap holders and dispensers
  • Mirrors and shaving cabinets
  • Shelving and storage units
  • Grab rails for safety (see aged care and disability rails)
  • Shower curtain rails
  • Shower screen adjustments, seals and handles
  • Vanity handles and doors
  • Bathroom exhaust fan grilles and covers (not electrical work)
  • Laundry hooks, rails and drying racks

Drilling into tiles

Most bathroom accessories go onto tiled walls, and drilling tiles is where things can go wrong. A cracked tile is hard to replace, especially in older bathrooms where matching tiles are no longer available. We:

  • Use the right drill bits for ceramic and porcelain tiles
  • Drill slowly, without hammer action, and keep bits cool
  • Position fixings away from tile edges where possible
  • Drill through grout lines when that suits the layout
  • Seal fixing holes against moisture

We also check for pipes before drilling. In most bathrooms the water pipes run vertically above and below taps and shower mixers, and we avoid those zones.

Fixing into the wall behind the tiles

What’s behind the tiles matters. Wet area walls may be fibre cement sheet, water-resistant plasterboard or masonry. For light accessories, wall plugs suited to the substrate work well. For towel rails that get pulled on, and anything someone might lean on, we fix into studs or use heavy-duty anchors. Grab rails must always be fixed into structure that can take a person’s weight.

Replacing old or broken fittings

When an accessory breaks, the existing holes don’t always line up with a new product. We can:

  • Reuse existing holes when the new fitting matches
  • Use cover plates to hide old holes
  • Fill unused holes with a colour-matched filler or silicone
  • Re-position fittings so new holes sit in grout lines

Mirrors and shaving cabinets

Bathroom mirrors range from small framed mirrors to large frameless panels and shaving cabinets with storage. We fix them securely, check they’re level and allow for the sink, taps and light switches. Shaving cabinets with lights or power need an electrician for the electrical connection, and we can coordinate with one.

Shower screens

We can adjust doors that won’t close properly, replace worn seals and door handles, and re-silicone screen bases. Broken glass or damaged screens need a glazier or shower screen specialist.

Laundry fittings

Laundries benefit from the same care: hanging rails, hooks, shelves and drying racks. We also fit wall-mounted cabinets and shelving, often with flat-pack assembly for laundry storage units.

Keeping water out

Every hole drilled in a wet area is a potential leak path. We seal fixings properly and check that the waterproofing behind the tiles isn’t compromised. If we see signs of an existing leak, like loose tiles, stained grout or swelling vanity panels, we’ll point them out. Leaks inside walls need a plumber or waterproofing specialist.

Small bathroom refreshes

A full renovation isn’t always needed. New accessories, fresh silicone, regrouted tiles and new vanity handles can make a tired bathroom look far better. See silicone and caulking and tiling and regrouting.

Planning where accessories go

A bathroom that works well has accessories placed for how people actually use the room. Some practical guidelines:

  • Towel rails near the shower or bath exit, within easy reach from inside the shower if possible, and with enough space for towels to dry. Heights around 1,000–1,200 mm off the floor suit most adults; lower rails help children.
  • Robe hooks on the back of the door or beside the shower, at a height everyone can reach.
  • Toilet roll holders within easy reach when seated, usually beside and slightly in front of the toilet.
  • Shower shelves within reach but away from the main spray so products don’t get constantly wet.
  • Mirrors and cabinets centred over the basin, at a height that suits the main users.
  • Hand towel rings or bars beside the basin.

We’ll mark positions with tape before drilling so you can check they work for you.

Tile types and how they affect installation

  • Ceramic wall tiles are relatively soft and easy to drill with the right bit.
  • Porcelain tiles are very hard and dense, needing diamond bits, patience and cooling to avoid cracking or burning the bit.
  • Glass and mosaic tiles need extra care to avoid chipping the tiny tiles or the glass face.
  • Natural stone can be brittle or porous; the right bit and sealing are important.

Newer homes in Officer and Pakenham East often have large-format porcelain tiles, which look great but take more care to drill.

Avoiding hidden services

Before drilling, we consider where pipes and cables are likely to run:

  • Water pipes usually run vertically above and below taps, mixers and outlets.
  • Cables usually run vertically above and below switches, power points and light fittings.
  • Waste pipes run behind vanities, toilets and baths.

We use detectors as an extra check, but knowing typical layouts is the first line of defence.

Accessory materials

  • Chrome is classic and easy to clean but shows water spots.
  • Brushed nickel and stainless steel hide marks well.
  • Matte black is popular in new homes and modern renovations; it can show soap residue.
  • Brushed brass and gold are on trend; quality varies widely.

Higher-quality accessories usually have more robust fixing systems, thicker metal and better finishes. Cheap accessories can rust or loosen quickly in a wet environment.

Concealed fixing systems

Many accessories use a mounting plate fixed to the wall, with the accessory sliding over and locking with a small grub screw. These look clean, but the plate must be fixed perfectly level and firm. If the grub screw is lost or loose, the accessory can wobble or fall off. We check the grub screws are tight and show you where they are.

Bathroom accessibility

Accessories can be chosen and positioned to help everyone use the bathroom comfortably: lower towel rails for children, lever taps for older hands (taps need a plumber), and grab rails that double as towel rails in some designs. See aged care and disability rails.

Replacing accessories in a renovation-free refresh

If your bathroom is dated but sound, swapping accessories to a matching set can transform the look. Combine with new silicone, fresh grout and new vanity handles, and the room can feel modern without major work. Make sure the new accessories cover the old fixing holes, or plan to fill them neatly.

Common bathroom fixture problems and fixes

Wobbly towel rail. Usually the grub screws have loosened or the wall plugs have failed. We tighten the grub screws or re-fix the mounting plates with better anchors or into studs.

Toilet roll holder hanging off. Often caused by people leaning on it. We re-fix it securely and seal the holes.

Rusty shower caddy. Cheap caddies rust quickly. Replacing it with a stainless or aluminium shelf fixed to the wall lasts much longer.

Mirror that’s slipped. Adhesive or clips have failed. We remove it safely and re-fix with suitable clips or a new adhesive system.

Shaving cabinet door that won’t close. Hinges need adjusting or replacing, similar to kitchen cabinets.

Holes from old accessories. We fill them with a colour-matched filler or silicone, or cover them with the new fitting.

Laundries in detail

Laundries in many Pakenham homes are compact and get heavy use. Useful additions include:

  • Wall-mounted drying racks that fold flat
  • Shelves above the washer and dryer
  • Hooks for brooms, mops and ironing boards
  • A hanging rail for clothes straight from the dryer
  • Cabinets above the tub

Dryers can be wall-mounted on brackets supplied by the manufacturer, provided the wall can take the load. We fix into studs or masonry and follow the instructions.

A tidy, careful finish

Bathrooms are small and have expensive surfaces. We protect vanities, baths and floors with drop sheets, catch drilling dust as we go and wipe down surfaces when finished. Any packaging from new accessories is taken away.

What to send for a quote

Photos of the bathroom showing the walls where accessories will go, the accessories you want installed (or links to them), and any existing damaged fittings. If you don’t yet have accessories, we can suggest suitable types and finishes, and you can buy them before the visit.

Wet area ventilation and fittings

Accessories last longer in a bathroom that dries out between uses. Moisture and steam corrode cheap metal finishes and loosen adhesives. Running the exhaust fan and opening a window helps both your fittings and your silicone stay in good condition for years.
